Problem

Oil spills in the oceans represent a serious environmental and economic problem, with profound consequences for marine ecosystems and the human communities that depend on them.

Spilled oil forms an oily layer on the surface of the water, which blocks light, hindering photosynthesis and affecting the entire marine food chain, from phytoplankton to top predators.

In addition, oil is highly toxic to fish, turtles, birds, and other marine animals, which can die from poisoning or lose their ability to warm themselves and move properly. These spills also affect economic activities such as fishing and tourism, which are interrupted in the affected areas.

Oil cleanup is complex, slow, and not always effective, and its negative effects can persist for years, compromising the recovery of ecosystems and coastal communities.

Solution

The solution consists of using biodegradable and eco-friendly materials, replacing synthetic sponges and chemicals that aggravate pollution, promoting high absorption capacity and environmental sustainability.

Why is it innovative?

There are several solutions for oil spills, such as synthetic absorbents, natural materials, chemical dispersants, floating barriers, and controlled burning, but all have limitations, either in efficiency or environmental impact.

The biodegradable sponge is innovative because it effectively absorbs oil, decomposes naturally, and protects the oceans, offering a sustainable and safe solution that surpasses traditional alternatives.
